Punjab Wedding Halls Must Close by 10 PM: Current Timings Under Energy Conservation Policy 2026
The Punjab government has enforced a 10 PM closing time for all wedding halls, marquees and marriage functions across the province as part of its ongoing energy conservation policy. Here is what couples and event planners need to know before booking a wedding venue in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad or any other city in Punjab.
If you are planning a wedding in Punjab in 2026, the closing time for your wedding hall or marquee is now fixed at 10 PM under the provincial government's energy conservation policy. This applies to all marriage halls, marquees, banquet facilities and even private marriage functions held at residences and farmhouses across Punjab.
What Are the Current Wedding Hall Timings in Punjab?
Under the energy conservation notification currently in force, the closing timings across Punjab are as follows:
- Markets, shops and shopping malls: Close by 9 PM
- Wedding halls, marquees and marriage functions: Close by 10 PM
- Restaurants, cafes and food outlets: Close by 11 PM
- Takeaway and home delivery: Exempt, no restriction
The 10 PM closing time applies to all marriage-related events including walimas, mehndis, engagements and receptions, regardless of whether the event is held at a commercial wedding hall, a marquee, a private residence or a farmhouse.
Why Were These Timings Introduced?
The restrictions were first introduced in April 2026 as part of a federal government energy conservation drive triggered by the global fuel crisis arising from the US-Iran conflict. The federal government directed all provinces except Sindh to enforce early closing times for commercial establishments to reduce electricity consumption during peak evening hours.
Punjab complied and initially set market closing times at 8 PM and wedding hall closing times at 10 PM. The restrictions drew strong pushback from traders and the public who argued that 8 PM was too early given work hours and evening culture.
Was There a Relaxation During Eid?
Yes. In May 2026, responding to widespread protests from traders and the public, the Punjab government temporarily lifted all timing restrictions until June 1, 2026 to allow extended shopping and celebrations during Eidul Azha. All shops, markets, hotels, restaurants and wedding halls were permitted to operate beyond their notified hours during this period.
However, from June 2, 2026, the restrictions were fully reimposed. As of the latest government notification dated June 21, 2026, the public-facing restrictions remain in force while the government has only withdrawn the austerity measures that applied to its own civil servants and offices.
Are Any Establishments Exempt?
Yes. The following are exempt from the closing time restrictions:
- Pharmacies, medical stores and hospitals
- Medical laboratories and clinics
- Petrol pumps and CNG stations
- Standalone bakeries, tandoors and milk shops
- IT companies and call centres
- Gyms and sports facilities
- Takeaway and home delivery services
What Does This Mean for Wedding Bookings in Punjab?
If you are booking a wedding hall in Lahore or elsewhere in Punjab, confirm with the venue management that your event will conclude by 10 PM. Late-running functions risk fines and enforcement action by local administration. It is advisable to schedule dinner earlier than usual, ideally by 8:30 to 9 PM to allow the guests time to leave before the 10 PM deadline.
Wedding hall owners have expressed concern about the impact on business, particularly since Pakistani wedding culture typically involves late evening events. However, until the government revises or lifts the policy, the 10 PM limit remains legally binding across Punjab.
